THE COLD WEATHER HAS ARRIVED!

 The cold weather has arrived.  Many children are coming to school with the proper attire and some are not. Unless the temperature is significantly below zero and we are directed to keep the children in for outdoor learning and lunch, they will not be allowed to stay inside just because they find it too cold. 

Here is a list of the important pieces of clothing that should be worn during these cold months: 
ü  a warm, heavy coat
ü  waterproof and weatherproof boots
ü  warm, waterproof gloves
ü  snow pants
ü  hat
ü  scarf
ü  layered sweaters

In your child’s bag, it would be beneficial for your son/daughter to have the following:
ü  an extra pair of warm socks
ü  an extra pair of warm gloves

 Let’s do the best we can to keep warm and healthy /;;over the upcoming months.

On November 11th, your child will be receiving the Kindergarten Communication of Learning.

Today in your child's backpack there is a parent teacher interview form (shown below). We would like to meet with all of you at this time to discuss your child's progress thus far. Please take a minute to fill out the form and return the form as soon as possible.

happy-halloween-images-2We will be celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 31st. Your child may come to school dressed in their costume. We will have a day full of games, treats and FUN! If your child would like to bring in treats to share with their friends(there are 29 students), please remember that treats must be nut free.

Library

Dear K2 Families,

Today your child signed out a library book that they will be bringing home to share with you. Please take time to read the book with your child and return the book for our next library visit, which will be next Thursday. Our library time will fall on Thursday until mid November.

Book A Day Program
Dear Families,

Today your Senior Kindergarten child was sent home with a book bag. We will be sending their book bag home daily so that your child will have the opportunity to practice their reading skills every evening. Please listen to them read, offering guidance and assistance when necessary. Remember to be patient and encouraging.

When your child has finished reading, discuss the story together. This will reinforce what they have read and improve comprehension skills. Date and sign the reading log and make sure your child returns both the book and reading log to school the next day in order to receive a new book.

The more your child reads, the more confident they will become while developing a life-long love of reading.

Simple Strategies for Creating Strong Readers
 
Without doubt, reading with children spells success for early literacy. Putting a few simple strategies into action will make a significant difference in helping develop children into good readers and writers:
- Read from a variety of children’s books, including fairy tales, song books, poems, and information books.
- Through reading aloud, providing print materials, and promoting positive attitudes about reading and writing, you can have a powerful impact on children’s literacy and learning.
- Invite your child to read with you everyday.
- Read your child’s favourite book over and over.
- When reading a book where the print is large, point word by word as you read. This will help the child learn that reading goes from left to right and understand that the word he/she  says is the word he/she sees.
- Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat. Invite the child to join in on these parts. Point word by word as he/she reads along with you.
- Discuss new words. For example: “This big house is called a palace. Who do you think lives in a palace?”
- Stop and ask about the picture and about what is happening in the story
 
 Reading well is at the heart of all learning. Help make a difference!
